My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I couldn't explain/account for/describe the sudden surge of fear/terror/unease that had gripped me, but it was undeniable. I tried/attempted/fumbled to rationalize the feeling, but it was like trying to grasp smoke. The air grew colder/more frigid/bitterly cold, and the breath on my neck seemed closer/nearer/right behind me. I could almost feel its warmth/its chill/its touch against my skin.
